Will You Marry Me? Two Unique Surprise Proposals - Denver Wedding Photographer

First, I can't tell you how fun photographing a surprise proposal is!  Why?  Well, because everything is a surprise!  As a photographer, all of your senses and training come into play AT ONCE!  You senses are peaked - you notice everything because you are on a covert mission to be sly and go unnoticed.  Your skills must be honed and ready in a millisecond to record life changing moments in...A MOMENT!  This all sounds very dramatic and IT IS!   Photographing a surprise proposal is exhilarating!! Second, it's very exciting that capturing these surprise proposals have become so popular!  What a fantastic gift to give your soon-to-be wife (or husband)!

Our first location was at the world famous Red Rocks Ampitheatre, where many flock to see the majestic rock formations that make this Ampitheatre a most memorable place to visit.  A couple of facts about Red Rocks (I had NO idea!) that I found really cool:   Red Rocks is geologically formed, so there is no other place like it in the world...and the park has been open since 1941!  How cool is that?

Our second location was at the world renowned Broadmoor Hotel.  A couple of fun facts about the Broadmoor is that this resort has been around since 1918!  The Broadmoor has also been ranked by Forbes as 5 star hotel for 52 straight years.  That is a pretty incredible feat and it's no wonder - the hotel has beautiful artwork and a classic old world feel.  Once you step foot on the grounds, you are well taken care of.

On to these fun images!  I've mixed both proposals together for spontaneity!

Congratulations to JT and Anna and also to Ian and Kristina!!  I wish you many happy lifetimes together!

(and, props to Anna who hiked up and down Red Rocks in the snow and ice for JT....and props to Kristina who braved 25 degrees to go on a romantic walk with Ian around the Broadmoor!)

Enjoy!!!

2013 - A Year in Review, Sort Of - Denver, Colorado Photographer

2013 was an incredible year in many ways.  We are fortunate to have been in business since 2001 and continue to love what we do!  I could list the many weddings and events that we've done this year, but I also feel it's important to share personal work as well.  In the off season, I continue my education and dedication to being the best that I can be and I feel it's also important to take the time to recharge my creative batteries!   Going to new places and seeing new things help to recharge my creative batteries, which leads me to travel photography. Travel photography is quite challenging.  You don't really know what you will be capturing.  Sure, you can document surroundings but will the people you encounter want their photo taken?  Am I being respectful of where I am in this moment?  By having my camera, will I take myself out of the experience to photograph what is happening?  Those are some questions I ask myself when I'm out and about.  Not only do I recharge myself by seeing new and different things, but I also feel that my photography skill only improves with these experiences.

I will continue to blog the many heartfelt weddings and family sessions that we have done this past year, but for now I'd like to share with you some images from my travels from early last year.  There were no solid plans that were followed, everything you see here (with the exception of a couple of photos of myself), was every day life unfolding.  The sights, smells, colors, people and experiences will stay with me for a long time.  The countries represented in this photo montage are:  Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

I could go on and on about my business achievements for the year, but for this one post, in the early "new" year, I'd like to share with you these images that are responsible for recharging my batteries, making me a more authentic and aware photographer!

Best Wishes for another amazing and creative year - Happy 2014!

Enjoy!

A Wash Park Engagement Session - Denver Photographer

Meet Jennie and Kent!  Kent surprised Jennie one night during one of their nightly dog walks at Wash Park.  He went to the park earlier in the day with chalk and wrote out their initials and a big heart on a path somewhat secluded from the main road.  Jennie was completely surprised to see their initials on the path when they came across it and was thrilled when Kent then went down on bended knee!  How romantic!

Enjoy!  Can't wait until your wedding in September!

Downtown Denver Engagement Session - Denver, Colorado

Meet Sarah and Brendan!  We got right down to some fun starting at Commons Park and continuing on walking and exploring different parts of the Platte River and surrounding areas.  I loved Sarah's bright dress and knew we should head over by Elitches to check out the murals under Speer Boulevard.  I was quite happy and they were quite playful!!  Both Sarah and Brendan were into having fun and being spontaneous and, honestly - that's when the best photos happen - unplanned and relaxed!

Wedding Tip #1 - Knowing What Time the Sun Goes Down on Your Wedding Day - Denver Wedding Photographer

I thought it would be a good idea to offer some helpful wedding photography tips to planning brides and grooms.  So, here we go!

I'm a huge fan of variety - in lighting and locations!  The more variety in both, the better!  So, when helping a bride plan her timeline for the day, I research what time sunset will be and let her know.  I suggest taking the bride and groom out of the reception to do some fun and relaxed portraits during sunset or the magic hour - which is right after sunset but before it gets completely dark.

Enjoy this beautiful sunset from a wedding in Steamboat Springs!

A Downtown Denver Engagement Session - Byron White United States Courthouse, Denver, Colorado

Meet Tiffany and Kevin.  We had a super fun engagement session all over Lodo.  We started at the Byron White Courthouse on Stout Street - had a quick cocktail at Harry's Bar in the Magnolia Hotel and then headed to Larimer Square and ended up at the Corner Office Famous yellow wall.  You know you are having fun when at the end of the session, your couple does the Worm!  Yeah!

An Engagement Session in New York City - New York

That is not a typo!!  I recently returned from helping a friend photograph a wedding in New Jersey at the very swanky Crystal Springs Resort.  Kevin gave me a warm New York welcome by scheduling an engagement session in the City before the weekend so we could get our creativity a kick start!  We had a blast!  We started at the High Line Park, a brand new park that was an existing freight line elevated above the street.  The transformation is unreal!  The park is modern and just a breath of fresh air!  If you are ever in NYC, I highly recommend a stroll (and some gelato!) through the High Line.

Enjoy!

An Evergreen Engagement Session - Evergreen, Colorado

First, I am reading "Eat, Pray, Love" again.  I love that book!  It has nothing to do with being engaged, but it does have everything to do with writing the most luscious sentences that flow every so lovingly together, Elizabeth Gilbert has a way with words!  I shall make a meager attempt now....if nothing else, this shall make us both laugh! Meet Lauren, an actress and Bret - her soulmate.   How do I know?  Well, after watching people and studying them and waiting for moments to happen- seeing expressions on faces, loving gestures, a smile with just the eyes - and, let us not forget a "deep, hot stare" - I think I know.   The looks they gave each other could melt steel.

On to the photos - it's clear I must take an official writing class of some sort - or keep reading "Eat, Pray, Love"

Enjoy!

A Golden Engagement Session - Golden, Colorado

Meet Erin and Chris!  I met Erin when I did my Yoga Teacher Training in Costa Rica.  They are the perfect Colorado couple - they love the outdoors!  Erin has a thing for heart rocks and, of course, we had to look for one during the session - low and behold, Chris found one and he gave Erin his "heart"...I love these two!

Can't wait for your wedding!

Enjoy!

Yoga Meets Nascar - Denver Engagement Session

Things that compliment each other - like Yin and Yang, Sun and Moon, Peanut Butter and Chocolate and Yoga and Nascar - wait a minute?  Whaaat?

Meet Colleen and Joe - one of the loveliest couples!  Colleen and I hit it off right away - we talked about yoga and how it has impacted our lives - in a way, we were soul sisters.  Joe loved his truck and wanted his pride and joy somehow incorporated into the engagement session - the photo you see is how it evolved - Joe with his truck and Colleen with her yoga melding perfectly together in this setting of scenic Colorado.

Enjoy!

University of Colorado, Boulder - Boulder Engagement Session

Meet Leslee and Juan - alumni of University of Colorado, Boulder.  We had fun walking around the campus and we laughed pretty hard at some of the stories from their school days.

Seeing What is Right in Front of You - Found Images - Denver Photographer

When I'm not on high alert photographing weddings, I like to stop, take a deep breath and look around for interesting objects.  Recently I photographed three Steamboat Springs weddings in a row - that is a lot of driving!  As we journeyed through Colorado, I noticed an area I really wanted to explore and made a mental note of it.  The following weekend when we drove through, we allotted time to pull off for just 30 minutes so that I could do just that - explore - of course with a camera in my hand!  The water was low and there were so many beautiful things to photograph!  Of course, I mixed in a few random photos from Steamboat as well (who can resist horses along a fence in the countryside?).

Doing a bit of personal work really is rejuvenating, even though they are random snapshots!

Enjoy!

A Denver Engagement Session - Denver Country Club

Meet Brooke and Patrick!  We did a quick shoot at the Denver Country Club one evening!

An Evergreen Engagement Session - Evergreen, Colorado

Meet Sarah and Trevor and Bella, too!  We met at the lovely Elk Meadow Open Space park up in Evergreen - one of my favorite places to shoot!  The weather was perfect, the lighting sublime and we had a great evening laughing and taking photos!

Enjoy!

A Chautauqua Engagement Session, Boulder

Meet Amy and David!  They are planning a wonderful wedding in June of this year at Cheyenne Mountain Resort! First, they are completely smitten with each other!  Second, looks like they have a "friendly" rivalry going on between them and their favorite basketball teams the Houston Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks.  All I can say is, by the look of the photo, they are SERIOUS and I am Switzerland!

Enjoy!

Abbie and Ryan - an Evergreen Engagement Session

Meet Abbie and Ryan - the first thing that I noticed about these two is that Ryan adores Abbie like there's no tomorrow!  She's the cat's pajamas in his eyes!

Enjoy!
